Selecting The Right Portable Air Compressor

An air compressor is a machine that alters the power that is generated by a diesel or gasoline engine or an electric motor into kinetic energy. This is done through the compression and pressurizing of air that is them released in fast spurts. There are several tasks that can conveniently be undertaken using a portable air compressor.

One of the uses of compressors is supplying clean air at high pressure to top up gas cylinders such as those used by campers. Also, divers in submerged surfaces get a supply of clean air at mid range pressure. Medium pressure compressors are also used to supply clean air to run valves operated with the pneumatic HVAC controls. Air brushing machines are also run by air compression.

Another use of this gadget is supplying high quantities of average pressure air to run pneumatic equipment. Additionally, they are used for filling tires and producing vast volumes of mid range pressure that is used in macroscopic industrial production like oxidizing petroleum corking and running the purge systems for cement plant bags.

One of the methods compressors use is positive displacement. In those that run using this method, air is directed into a chamber with lowered volume so that it can be compressed. This is how piston types work whereby air is pumped into an air chamber via pistons that remain in constant motion. Valves moving in the same direction channel air into the chamber for compression.

The rotary screw compressor is another type that is enabled by positive displacement. Two similar helical screws revolve with one guiding the other towards a chamber. The volume in the chamber declines as the screws turn. There is also the vane compressor that is enabled by a rotor that has slots in it. Also, the blades in this type are placed variably. Air is thus directed into a chamber where its volume gets compressed.

There are also negative displacement compressors one of which is the centrifugal one. Its function is facilitated by centrifugal power that is generated by an impeller that rotates and increases then lowers the retained air which creates pressure.

When choosing a portable device, take into account pressure and volume requirements. For instance, if the air compressor is to be used for airbrushing, the ideal would be a tank with a capacity of 5 liters and about 30psi of sustained air pressure. This would be enough for a job that can be called small in comparison to industrial scale operations. For larger jobs, it is best to chose large device with a larger capacity and enough power to avoid having to stop to refill the tank.

Consider as well how easy it will be to port the gadget by rolling or lifting it. If it will not be moved around so much, it can be placed in one spot and be connected via a long hose. Consider the power source as well. The majority of them need about 110V to run and larger ones approximately 240V. A portable air compressor should be chosen with all these factors in mind. A good choice will make it easier to get a job done.
