Decorating and Furnishing Your Home on the Cheap

If you’re tired of the way your home looks, you can change it without spending a lot of money. Supposing you have enough furniture to fill your home, there are a lot of things you can do that don’t cost a lot that can improve the look and feel of your home.

Starting with the furniture you do have, instead of buying new furniture you can change the look of your existing pieces. You can paint tables and cabinets, changing out the hardware and making the table or cabinet look completely different. You can spend a very little bit of money on a slipcover for that ratty old couch, or you can be a little more ambitious, spend less money, buy the fabric and make your own.

As for floors, if you don’t have enough money to refinish the hardwood, change the carpet, or do a new kitchen or bathroom floor, you can always look into rugs. You can even put an area rug over carpet to cover stains or simply to change the look of the room. While some rugs are expensive, most towns have discount furniture stores that sell rugs, and you can always shop yard sales and estate sales for rugs. Just make sure you steam clean it before you put it in your home, lest you carry someone else’s pet hair, crumbs, and germs into your own home.

Never underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint to change the way a room looks. Whether you simply change the color or if you decide on a focal point, like an accent wall, paint is your single most powerful weapon in the war against a humdrum home. You can consider faux finishes to jazz up a room, or stenciling if you want designs on your walls. Additionally, you can spice up a blank wall with a large decal that costs less than fifty dollars, if you want a focal point without spending a lot on wall art.

Mirrors are always a great addition to a room. Not only are they pretty, but they make the room look better. Hunt yard sales, estate sales, and salvage yards for antique mirrors to hang, or even lean against a wall. These can cost a pretty penny, but if you buy a plain, unframed mirror, you can frame it yourself and save a ton of money.

Along those same lines, if you want more or different wall art and don’t have a lot of money, you can take pieces of wallpaper, your own artwork, or even magazine pages and frame them for some fresh artwork on your walls.

For spaces like the kitchen and the bathroom, painting is key, but so is accessorizing. The right throw rug, shower curtain, kitchen curtain, or set of towels can change the way a room looks. If you can afford it, a new appliance or fixture, like a new dishwasher, a new sink faucet in the kitchen, or a pedestal sink in the bathroom can really change the way things look and make you happier in your space.
